Online Resume Templates: How They Can Hurt Your Job Hunt

I will never forget the job seeker who came to me with a resume based on a template and had forgotten to delete the directions. Right in the middle of the resume stood the words “Company Name.”

Resume templates open up a host of problems for job seekers, because they tend to use formats that:

  • Contain outdated content (such as “references available on request”).
  • Are not readable by automatic resume tracking systems.
  • Are based on obscure word processing programs or that create file names with odd extensions, producing a file that is difficult to modify. Resumes should always be written in Word.
  • Ignore special circumstances, such as a gap in employment, a change in location or a shift in career goals.

If, despite all those problems, you still want to try a resume template, be careful of the online site you choose. Some sites will capture and sell important personal data that you would rather keep private or subject you to endless emails.
